Colourful posters, lights, rain bearing clouds, young and old rock fans and the cool sea breeze. This was the scene on Sunday evening where Junkyard Groove entertained the crowd, playing a fundraising concert for Reclaim Our Beaches movement @ Spaces, Besant nagar.

The rain gods were grateful enough to spare that evening without drenching the open air auditorium and dampening the spirits of rock fanatics.

The event begun with foot tapping melodious music courtesy, Anything Goes, an all female vocal band. The lovely ladies set the perfect mood for the evening and following them were none other than our very own Chennai band Junkyard Groove.

Ameeth Thomas was right on the mark with his witty jokes and sensational singing as well. The band played their popular numbers which included “Folk you”, “Its okay”, “Say goodbye”, “Let you go” and others, while the crowd swung to their tunes.

The highlight of the evening was JYG covering MJ’s “Black or White” and “I gotta feeling” by Black eyed Peas . Singing along with JYG,the crowd rejoiced though the band managed with some blah blah lyrics.

JYG showed why they are one of the leading bands in our county through their professionalism and passion for their music. Ameeth also utilized this opportunity, reaching out to young minds as he spoke about the plight of our beaches and the pollution levels in them.

The everlasting spirit of Junkyard Groove, sold out tickets, jam-packed auditorium  and smiling fans, all culminated to bring out a successful evening.

JYG truly rocks!

Molotov Cocktail live at Chipstead

There are those times when you’re lost in a crowd and the only friend you find is the music the DJ is playing. That is exactly how I realised how a Beatles song can help you when you need company.

I was at Chipstead for the Molotov Cocktail gig. As the crowd started pouring in, the DJ went from The Beatles to CCR to Tom Petty – setting the groove for the evening I was already waiting for. I completely forgot that I was there to take photographs and just about half an hour ago I was mumbling to myself about how dimly the place was lit up for a rock show. I’m used to the fancy hot lights that burn the sensor, the colours, the reflectors and sometimes even that smoke thingy. But there was none of that here. I was disappointed only to be pepped up by music. That was enough to pep me up. The band was still missing.

When they finally got in, they started off with I Got a Feeling. The crowd was instantly in love with Arjun Thomas’ voice. Another song. Then was Shine by Mr. Big followed by Vertigo by U2. Every now and then, Arjun kept reminding the crowd that he was singing only pop songs and was warming up.

The next song was Mocktail – a song for singles to feel even more miserable about themselves. Was that supposed to hit us stags at the wrong place? The whiskey sure made the blow feel good. Then came Message in a Bottle by Police followed by Drive by Incubus and then was Jeremy by Pearl Jam. This drove the crowd really into hyper-drive. After Come Together, Cupid’s Dead by Extreme and Aeroplane by RHCP, there was a surprise visitor in the crowd – Neeladri. Arjun was ever so thankful for his showing up and continued the show with Hard To Handle. Then there was Pearl Jam again with Even Flow. All songs were played to perfection. The lead guitar, the drums and the bass gelled well to only make Arjun’s work easier.

In the middle of the show, Arjun Thomas enlightened the crowd with how a band could perform magic, and not only music, by just changing two members of the band. Step out Arjun Thomas and step in Ameeth Thomas and Craig Maxworth and you have Junkyard Groove. They performed It’s OK and Fork You. Both the songs went well with the crowd.

Another few songs later, there was a tribute Michael Jackson – Smooth Criminal. Even though not the original version, it rocked. For this, we had Benny Dayal accompany Arjun with vocals. This was followed by couple more of songs including Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic by Police and Purple Haze, before the show came to a close.

But not just as yet. On demand, Siddu and Benny Dayal played a few songs by The Beatles for the icing on the cake.

It was an evening filled with music and all the glass in Chipstead must still be vibrating from all the energy that filled up the place on Sunday evening. Cheers to Molotov Cocktail.
